Zhou, for 2023

by Xuanzi Liu

Zhou “宙” is a Chinese character that translates to 1) Past and future, 2) Eon, and 3) Universe.

The vastness of this character embodies what this piece attempts to explore.

The piece is broken down into 4 parts - Intro, 脱离 (dissociation), 救赎(salvage), and epilogue. The ‘plot’ is deliberately ambiguous to allow the audience to draw the interpretations of the piece from emotion. Composed of montages presented in a stream of consciousness, the narrative follows a psychological experience of deconstruction and reconstruction.

The Creative Process

2023 was a year I saved to explore my identity without constraint, burden, or expectations. Being away from my school, my hometown, my family, I spent an endless amount of time pondering on the things that I care deeply about. This year was turbulent, violent, vibrant and romantic. I’ve been gradually collecting the things I saw and felt in my life and in my dreams… until and one rainy evening in May, I sat down at Wagas and poured out everything I had.

I knew I wanted to experiment with sound and light, synthesizing seemingly unrelated elements to tell coherent and familiar story in replacement of language. I have always felt the limitation of using dialogue to express emotion that aren’t meant to be verbalized. For example, used techno music and soliloquies to embody chaos and disorder. I worked with my musician friend Yiru to produce the sound tracks, mashing and editing them so that hearing the soundtrack alone is enough to feel the story.

The soundtracks are the centerpiece of the performance. I wanted to preserve the spontaneity of emotions, documenting the performers’ raw and untethered reaction to the music and the atmosphere. Therefore, the choreography of individual body movements relied heavily upon improvisation, where I only designed the form and blocking.
